Artist's Description

This is a photo of an ammonite fossil. These cephalopods appeared around 240 million years ago and went extinct with the dinosaurs around 64 million years ago. Though it has the appearance of a nautilus shell, it is more related to an octopus or squid. This specimen is about four and a half inches wide, some were up to three feet in diameter. This is a color version, I also have a black and white version in my Sealife Gallery.

I also love the Sierra Nevada mountains and have photographed extensively on both the western and eastern sides.
