Description
This is a photo of an ancient Ammonite fossil. These cephalopods first appeared 240 million years ago, and went extinct with the dinosaurs 64 million years ago. Though it looks like a nautilus shell, they were more related to squids and octopus. Some were up to 3 feet in size, this one is about 4 and a half inches long. A painterly effect has been added in post processing of the image.
